Son of Mine

"I’ll tell instead of brave and fine, When lives of black and white entwine" - Created by Balarinji Studio
The Son of Mine installation is the last verse from the acclaimed 1960 poem, ‘Son of Mine’ by Noonuccal woman, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (also known as Kath Walker), one of Australia’s finest poets.
The artwork reflects a shared mission to protect Australia with bravery and honours the spirit of cooperation, mutual respect and belonging shown by black and white servicemen coming together in the furnace of war.
The installation is visible at Chandos Road on the north bound batter.

My son, your troubled eyes search mine,
Puzzled and hurt by colour line.
Your black skin soft as velvet shine;
What can I tell you, son of mine?
I could tell you of heartbreak, hatred blind,
I could tell you of crimes that shame mankind,
Of brutal wrong and deeds malign,
Of rape and murder, son of mine;
But I'll tell instead of brave and fine
When lives of black and white entwine,
And men in brotherhood combine
This would I tell, you son of mine.
