Electronic Tolling

Toll Calculator

What is Full Electronic Tolling?

  • Full electronic tolling will make Westlink M7 one of the most advanced motorways in the world
  • There will be no toll booths or boom gates and drivers will travel seamlessly at motorway speeds for 40 kilometres
  • Advanced technology will identify each vehicle by its electronic tag or its number plate as it passes under gantries at the entry and exit points along the road
  • All existing motorways in Sydney have cash booths – these can cause traffic congestion, especially at peak periods
  • Transurban will develop and operate the tolling and customer management system for Westlink M7 using the advanced technology that Transurban developed and uses on Melbourne’s CityLink motorway – currently Australia’s only full electronic toll road

Benefits of Full Electronic Tolling

  • No stopping or slowing down to pay tolls
  • Travel times are reduced and travel time certainty is increased
  • No need to worry about exact change because tolls are automatically deducted from the driver’s account
  • There will be other payment options for infrequent users who choose not to set up an account
  • Less traffic congestion because traffic does not have to slow down at toll booths
  • Less noise and air pollution, substantial fuel savings and less wear and tear on vehicles because there is no stopping and starting

How much will it cost?

  • On Westlink M7, motorists will only pay for the distance that they travel. Driving on Westlink M7 will be cost effective for short local trips as well as for longer journeys
  • The toll has been set at $0.25 per kilometre (2000 dollars, adjusted for CPI)
  • The toll for trips longer than 20 km has been be capped at $5.00 (2000 dollars, adjusted for CPI)
